Four-star review of The Hill of Secrets by Galina Vromen
The author has requested that I state that this review contains spoilers. (Actually, she wanted me to remove spoilers from the reviews om Amazon and Goodreads). Therefore, I'll leave a space in case you don't want to read the spoilers)
There were parts of this book that I loved, including the
setting, since I’ve been there several times and even sold my book at Fuller
Lodge, the mentions of Maria Martinez’s San Ildefonso beautiful pottery, the
exploration of the reactions of families uprooted from their homes and brought
to the somewhat desolate yet beautiful area, and even most of the characters. I
could have done without the romance between a sixteen-year-old girl and a
twenty-something boy as well as the extramarital affair, although both played
into the story. The changing attitudes of a few characters toward what was
being created at Los Alamos was very real. I’ve seen the movie Oppenheimer,
which did not touch on some of what was described in this book, and I’ve read
other books about what it was like there during the war. This fills in what was
missing from those books.
